שבשלה בחלבה אסורה דאפילו דיעבד נמי לא תנא נמי רישא שבשלה

was cooked with its milk it is forbidden, in which case it is not permitted even after the act, he stated in the first clause too 'if it was cooked'.

כי סליק רבי אלעזר אשכחיה לזעירי אמר ליה

When R'Eleazar went up [to Palestine] he met Ze'iri to whom he said: Is there to be found here a Tanna<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' V. Glos.');">¹</span>

איכא תנא דאתנייה לרב כחל

who recited to Rab the law of the udder?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., that it is forbidden if cooked without having been cut open.');">²</span>

אחוייה לרב יצחק בר אבודימי

He immediately pointed out to him R'Isaac B'Abudimi.

אמר ליה

Thereupon the latter said unto him: I did not recite to him [any prohibition] at all about the udder; Rab however found an open space and put a fence around it.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., he came to a place where the people were negligent in their religious observances and he therefore placed upon them additional restrictions.');">³</span>

אני לא שניתי לו כחל כל עיקר ורב בקעה מצא וגדר בה גדר

For Rab once happened to be at Tatlefush<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' In the neighbourhood of Sura; Obermeyer p. 298. tgchr');">⁴</span>

דרב איקלע לטטלפוש שמעה לההיא איתתא דקאמרה לחבירתה

and overheard a woman asking her neighbour.

ריבעא דבשרא כמה חלבא בעי לבשולי

How much milk is required for cooking a rib'a<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' a term describing a certain quantity of meat, cf. Bez. 29a. According to Rashi: 'a litra'. y" uh="" hbsgn');"="">⁵</span>

אמר

of meat?

לא גמירי דבשר בחלב אסור

Said Rab: Do they not know that meat cooked with milk is forbidden?

איעכב וקאסר להו כחלי

He therefore stayed there [some time] and declared the udder forbidden to them.

רב כהנא מתני הכי

R'Kahana reported the passage as above; but R'Jose B'Abba reported it as follows: [R'Isaac B'Abudimi said.] 'I taught him [the prohibition only] with regard to the udder of a milch [cow]'.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., without however stating so expressly as the Gemara continues to explain, v. .');">⁶</span>

רבי יוסי בר אבא מתני

And relying upon the keen perception of R'Hiyya he had stated this law in general about the udder.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Without explaining that it was only the udder of a milch cow that was forbidden. Rab however had heard this statement without making the necessary distinction. This is apparently the interpretation of this difficult passage.');">⁷</span>

אנא כחל של מניקה שניתי לו ומפלפולו של רבי חייא שנה ליה כחל סתם

Rabin and R'Isaac B'Joseph once happened to be at R'Papi's, and they were served with a dish of udder.

רבין ורב יצחק בר יוסף איקלעו לבי רב פפי אייתו לקמייהו תבשילא דכחל

R'Isaac B'Joseph ate of it, but Rabin did not.

רב יצחק בר יוסף אכל רבין לא אכל

Said Abaye: Wherefore did not this childless Rabin<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' He was bereft of his children, and therefore was always referred to sympathetically as 'the childless Rabin'; v. Pes. 70b.');">⁸</span>

אמר אביי

eat?

רבין תכלא אמאי לא אכל

Consider this, R'Papi's wife was the daughter of R'Isaac Nappaha, and R'Isaac Nappaha was most strict in his actions;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'a master of (good) deeds'.');">⁹</span>

מכדי דביתהו דרב פפי ברתיה דר' יצחק נפחא הואי ור"י נפחא מריה דעובדא הוה אי לאו דשמיע לה מבי נשא לא הוה עבדא

now had she not seen this practice in her parents' home she certainly would not have served them with it.

בסורא לא אכלי כחלי בפומבדיתא אכלי כחלי

In Sura people did not eat the udder at all, in Pumbeditha they used to eat it.

רמי בר תמרי דהוא רמי בר דיקולי מפומבדיתא איקלע לסורא במעלי יומא דכפורי אפקינהו כולי עלמא לכחלינהו שדינהו

Rami B'Tamri, also known as Rami B'Dikuli, of Pumbeditha once happened to be in Sura on the eve of the Day of Atonement.

אזל איהו נקטינהו אכלינהו

When the townspeople took all the udders [of the animals] and threw them away, he immediately went and collected them and ate them.

אייתוה לקמיה דרב חסדא

He was then brought before R'Hisda who said to him: 'Why did you do it? ' He replied: 'I come from the place of Rab Judah who permits it to be eaten.'

אמר ליה

Said R'Hisda to him: 'But do you not accept the rule:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Supra 18b. Pes. 50a.');">¹⁰</span>

אמאי תעביד הכי

[When a person arrives in a town] he must adopt the restrictions of the town he has left and also the restrictions of the town he has entered? ' - He replied: 'I ate them outside the [city's] boundary.'

אמר ליה

'And with what did you roast them? ' He replied.'

מאתרא דרב יהודה אנא דאכיל

With the kernels [of grapes].'

אמר ליה

'Perhaps they were [the kernels] of wine used for idolatrous purposes? ' He replied.'

ולית לך נותנין עליו חומרי המקום שיצא משם וחומרי המקום שהלך לשם

They had been lying there more than twelve months.'<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' V. A.Z. 34a; kernels which had been used for idolatry, if dry i.e., after twelve months, are permitted for use.');">¹¹</span>

אמר ליה חוץ לתחום אכלתינהו

'Perhaps they were stolen goods? ' He replied.'

ובמה טויתינהו

The owners must have certainly abandoned all rights to them for lichen was growing amongst them.'

אמר ליה

He [R'Hisda] noticed that the other was not wearing the Tefillin<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' V. Glos.');">¹²</span>

בפורצני

and said to him.'

ודלמא מיין נסך הויא

Why do you not wear the Tefillin? ' He replied.'

אמר ליה

I suffer from the bowels, and Rab Judah has said.

לאחר שנים עשר חדש הוו

One who suffers from the bowels is exempt from wearing the Tefillin.'<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' For otherwise he would be constantly having to remove them in order to relieve himself.');">¹³</span>

ודלמא דגזל הוה

He further noticed that the other was not wearing fringes [on his coat] and said to him.'

אמר ליה

Why are you not wearing fringes? ' He replied.'

יאוש בעלים הוה דקדחו בהו חילפי

The coat [l am wearing] is borrowed, and Rab Judah has said.

חזייה דלא הוה מנח תפילין אמר ליה

מאי טעמא לא מנחת תפילין

אמר ליה

חולי מעיין הוא ואמר רב יהודה חולי מעיין פטור מן התפילין

חזייה דלא הוה קא רמי חוטי אמר ליה

מאי טעמא לית לך חוטי

אמר ליה

טלית שאולה היא ואמר רב יהודה
